July 8: Day of Delightful Delicacies
What a day of delightful delicacies. After eating at two of my favorite restaurants in the world, I’m not sure I’ll be able to fit into my motorcycle pants when I hit the road again tomorrow. But either way, it was worth every tasty bite! Besides, while I was sampling sumptuous food, Adventure Baby was getting a treat of his own.
With my time in Switzerland winding down, I decided to splurge today, dropping off Adventure Baby early in the morning for a service and then taking an Uber to the port of Nyon to head by boat across Lake Geneva to Yvoire, France to eat at what I think is the best creperie ever.
Arriving in the small medieval village, I toured the narrow streets sporting flowers in every possible nook and cranny. The old stone buildings are the perfect backdrop for planters, hanging pots, and small gardens bursting with blooms in pink, red, white, orange, and yellow. There is a reason this little hamlet is considered one of the most beautiful towns in France.
At La Creperie d’Yvoire I reserved a seat on the patio at one of the small tables Grannie and I always sat at, perfectly situated for people watching and admiring flowers up and down the lane.
My savory spinach crepe filled with ham, fresh cream, and Emmental, Comte, and Beaufort cheeses hit the spot. With a slightly brown and crispy exterior and a soft interior oozing with cheese, every bite melted in my mouth.
I was thankful that European restaurants consider it normal to spend an hour and a half eating lunch because I needed that much time to make room in my stomach for a desert crepe filled with butter and topped with lemon juice and sugar. Each sweet morsel provided a luscious dollop of butter, a crunchy bite of granulized sugar, and a tangy taste of lemon. Wow!
Returning by boat to Nyon and then by Uber to the mechanic, I arrived at the motorcycle dealership to pick up Adventure Baby, only to discover that somehow during the service the phone charging cord necessary for navigation stopped working. Fortunately, I had an extra cord at my hotel and was able to get it installed.
After spending some time with my grandmother, I headed along with family friend Christina to the little town of Bursins for dinner. Driving along the narrow streets between the vineyards there brought back memories of childhood summers in the village, playing in Grannie’s garden, skateboarding in her driveway, and wandering the streets in search of homemade ice cream from the local dairy.
Christina and I ate in the garden seating area there of Hotel-Restaurant de l’Union, an eatery I have frequented since I was five years old, and which specializes in a local delicacy called Malakoff. This crunchy, deep-fried cheese treat is created using a decadent combination of Gruyere, garlic, wine, and Kirsch served on top of a crusty bread and accompanied by mustard.
Returning from a satisfying dinner, I spent more time with Grannie before heading back to my hotel to pack for the road tomorrow.
