May 6: Ready to Ride

What a great ride! I don’t normally seek out interstate for my daily adventures but after getting highway pegs put on the Adventure Baby today, I decided to give them a test. What better way than to head south on I-5 to visit my son Elliot for lunch and dessert at his college campus in Eugene.

After weeks of preparation and modifications my new-to-me Honda CB 500x is ready to hit the road. After installing a skid plate, engine guards, risers, tail rack, lowering kit, custom seat, cut down windshield, heat shield, and power sources for navigation, battery tender, jump starter, and electric gear there was just one thing left on my list – highway pegs. I had hoped to avoid one more add on but last week’s trip to the coast and back convinced me the pegs would be worthwhile.

Heading south to Eugene and back provided the perfect testing grounds for the pegs as the trip involved over 200 miles of interstate. It was a little challenging at first finding a relaxing way to rest my feet on the pegs as they are smaller and a little higher up than the pegs on my Harley. But I was able to find several different ways to make the pegs work by shifting forward or backwards and adjusting the angle of my legs. I am looking forward to many miles of riding this summer and glad to know I will have several different positions to choose from while on the road.

In Eugene, I met Elliot at Hey Neighbor pizza and thoroughly enjoyed my wood-fired Bombo pizza with crushed tomato, fresh mozzarella, ricotta, pepperoni, basil, and Mike’s hot honey. I am so proud of Elliot and was so happy to get caught up on how his thesis is going and what his thoughts are for the future. After a wonderful meal with bursts of sun and blue sky as a backdrop, we stopped at Sweet Life Patisserie next door so I could treat him to one of their Josephine deserts. This puffed pastry shell is filled with vanilla custard and accompanied by a homemade raspberry sauce.

Driving home I was struck by the beauty of the swatches of bright green fields, flocks of grazing sheep, vast reaching views of blue sky dotted with white clouds, and birds in flight. What a great day to be on the road.
