November 20: Lights, camera, action!

Lights, camera, action! Today’s ride was all about getting awesome footage of the bike from every possible angle using every conceivable device. Dr. Dana Yip graciously offered to use his drone, Osmo, Insta 360, and iPhone to capture me and the bike zipping along the Clackamas River near Estacada. I think my favorite shot of the day was of Dr. Yip on my bike.

I have known Dr. Yip for 14 years as he has been my kids’ dentist and I have been his son’s math teacher. So, I was absolutely delighted when he agreed to spend this afternoon filming along the Clackamas. The idea was to capture me riding the bike in video format so that I could create a couple highlight reels for my new website – one of me and the bike and another of me speaking with action shots of the bike interspersed throughout.

I was so impressed with his knowledge of the technology as well as his creative suggestions about camera angles. We were able to get aerial footage of me, the bike, and the river using the drone. With the Insta 360 we got some great close – up footage of me riding as well as interesting close ups of shifting and the bike leaning into curves. Dr. Yip also used his iPhone and the Osmo device to create some short, fun videos with me getting on and off the bike.

The backdrop was absolutely stunning with the Clackamas River winding in the background and along one side and sheer cliffs on the other side. The shots were taken between Estacada and the North Fork Viewpoint and included great views of sun-drenched grass, towering evergreens, and blue sky. I can’t wait to share the footage. Thanks so much Dr. Yip!

I also want to acknowledge another West Linn resident – David Schelske has been filming action shots of motorcyclists for over 30 years and gave us great tips regarding the location, angles to shoot, and footage required. He will also be creating the biking highlight video. I’m so grateful for his advice and assistance.
