November 12: A Buffet of Delights from Snow to the Pacific Ocean

What a glorious day! Where else but in Oregon can you travel over a snow-encrusted mountain pass, cruise past the frothy waves of the Pacific Ocean, wind your way along multiple meandering rivers, and dine on the bay serenaded by sea lions all in one day?

Today’s ride to Waldport and Newport and back via backroads was just what the doctor ordered. After a busy week including some rather formidable obstacles, I was ready for some time on the bike.

Leo Guzman Fernandez led us south from Volcano Harley on 99E past the Willamette River Falls and through Woodburn. It was so refreshing and rejuvenating to swoop up and over hills and around the curves breathing in the crisp Fall air, gazing at the explosion of orange-tinted leaves, and marveling at the wildlife. During one memorable moment we passed thousands of birds lifting off into the sky from trees in the distance while the fall leaves danced across the road in front of us.

We continued south on highway 223 through Kings Valley and then west on Highway 34 through Alsea. This stretch of road is one of my favorites in Oregon because of the colorful mix of deciduous and evergreen trees, the numerous curves, and the plentiful water views. As we traveled through the Alsea Forest, the evergreen trees were so thick and abundant I was reminded of the Redwoods and snow on both sides of us reminded us that winter was on its way.

After reaching Waldport we headed north along highway 101 to Newport, enjoying views of the frothy waves of the Pacific Ocean hitting the rocky coast. As we passed seal rock I savored the feel of the sun on my back.

In Newport we had a delicious meal at the Clearwater Restaurant, splitting some mushroom risotto balls. The appetizer was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside and served with both marinara and pesto dipping sauce. The meat on my blackened salmon Caesar was moist and flavorful and almost fell apart on my fork. It was great to chat with Leo and be serenaded by the sea lions basking on the pier in the Yaquina Bay below.

Heading home, we traveled along Yaquina Bay Road, enjoying the curves as well as the beautiful views of the bay with ships resting on the calm blue waters and mountains in the distance. With daylight savings time in effect, the sun set, and temperatures dropped to the high 30’s by the time we arrived back to the Portland area. What an awesome day!
