December 19 Part Two: Wanting What You Get
Several years ago, while traveling by motorcycle in the US, I stopped at a coffee shop with a rather profound statement inked on its chalkboard – “happiness isn’t getting what you want, it’s wanting what you get.” With a full week shaved off my three-week trip to Ushuaia, a plane ride home to catch right after the New Year, and no way to extend my visit, I’m focusing on appreciating the time I have left.
My original plans for making my way south included visiting several penguin colonies on the coast, savoring tea with scones at a Scottish settlement, riding past flocks of green parrots lining a countryside road, and swimming with sea lions.
Although I may need to eliminate some of these stops given the few days I have left and the mileage I need to cover in what can be brutally windy conditions, I’m so darn excited about reaching Tierra Del Fuego, celebrating reaching the southern tip of the continent, and making my way back up to Punta Arena to catch my flight home.
If time allows, I hope to partake in some of the many wonderful adventures near Ushuaia – the Tierra Del Fuego National Park, emperor penguin colony, end of the world train ride, and of course a popular bakery.
Although it wasn’t the vacation I had planned, I have enjoyed exploring Colonia Del Sacramento in Uruguay by bike, walking the city streets of Bunes Aires, and relaxing at the hotel near the airport customs office while waiting to take possession of my bike. I don’t know what the next two weeks will hold, but I’m excited about spending it with Adventure Baby.
