January 3: Pit Crew Does it Again

Each motorcycle journey poses different opportunities, challenges, breathtaking scenery, and unusual wildlife. But one factor has remained constant in my solo travels through six continents over the last five and a half years – the kind, capable, and unwavering support of two dear friends, Grant Myers and Kathy Nesper, who act as my pit crew while I am on the road. I’m thankful to them for the part they played in helping me safely complete this recent adventure.

When I first headed out on my own across the country in the summer of 2020, Kathy offered to check in with me every night to make sure I was safe and Grant stood ready to troubleshoot mechanical issues or answer general riding questions.

Since then, their roles have evolved to include tracking me daily on my Garmin Mini In Reach and providing general assistance of almost any kind.

On this trip, Grant and Kathy both downloaded the Windy App so that we could work together to identify the safest windows for me to travel in based on wind forecasts, time needed to make it from one point to another, and other factors affecting my pacing such as ferry crossings and border controls. This collaboration was especially helpful as I had less flexibility than I had hoped given the delayed arrival of my bike in South America.

As is often the case while traveling in countries with different internet and telephone providers, I encountered problems with both my phone and computer. Kathy kindly brainstormed solutions with me so I could eventually make calls and upload what I needed to online.

When the right side of my engine guard cracked after the bike was slammed into the ground by extreme gusts in Comodoro Rivadavia, Grant pointed out that the company producing the protective accessory might be able to sell me the part needed to replace the defective component rather than the whole unit, saving me money on repairs.

While I was battling ferocious winds, traveling through new lands, working to keep my bike in top shape, and interacting with people who spoke a different language than me, it was comforting to know that Grant and Kathy were monitoring my progress every mile of the way and ready to come alongside me when needed. I’m grateful for their support in wrapping up another successful adventure.
