November 23: Gorge-ous Pops of Gold
What gorgeous pops of gold all around on today’s loop to Goldendale and back through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Sometimes it seems almost unbelievable that such magnificent displays of color and breathtaking natural beauty are right in my back yard.
With snow on the passes and rain on the coast and to the south, it was an easy decision today to head east. Riding along the north shore of the Columbia River on highway 14, I was struck yet again by the awe-inspiring views of the silver-blue river waters framed by lush green fields and yellow-tipped tree branches in the foreground and the crisp white blankets of fog settling on the dark foothills in the distance.
As I swooped around curves and through tunnels, I took in the sights of the rugged craggy cliffs to my left and the stunning mirrored reflections of trees and mountains in the river, lakes, and swamp waters to my right. Trains chugged along on the railroad tracks and traffic was almost nonexistent, leaving me in peace and solitude to take in the remarkable displays of fall color.
The further east I rode, the more pronounced the gold tones became. Mesas and plateaus topped by short amber-hued vegetation complemented the tall, thick strands of honey-colored grass lining both sides of the road. Vineyards with bright red and orange leaves provided a vivid contrast to the yellow-bleached grass beyond.
Crossing over the river on the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge, I headed west along the south shore of the Columbia, giving me a fresh perspective on the glorious river waters. As the cloud cover lifted and pockets of clear sky began to appear above, I was treated to a stunning palette of blues – light blue sky filled with wispy white clouds, cobalt -colored foothills, and rippling sapphire waters, all sandwiched between the gold-colored grass in the foreground and cliffs rising above. What an amazing day on the bike!
