June 5: Community Counts

I never thought I’d be so darn excited to walk in a boot that wasn’t made for motorcycling. But when my physical therapist gave me the go-ahead to move around without crutches in my orthopedic device last week, it felt like the doors of freedom were swinging wide open.

Each step in the recovery process from the three breaks in my leg several weeks ago has felt like an enormous gift – being able to climb up stairs, transport items with both hands, and even drive a car.

Last night as I worked alongside other singles cooking chili for the homeless in Oregon City, I reflected on the incredible impact my church, neighborhood, motorcycle, and work communities have had in my life as I rebuild after my injury.

Eight different people from these groups drove me to and from West Linn High School every workday, making it possible for me to continue teaching math to my students. Others set up safety and mobility devices in my home to help me function more independently.

I had assistance picking up groceries, getting my mail, cleaning my home, taking trash cans up and down the driveway, and even preparing meals. Colleagues at work carried stacks of copies for me and jumped up to help me access hard to reach areas.

I think one of the most touching acts of service was when students I didn’t even know broke away from their friend groups to run to the staff room door and open it when they saw me heading in that direction.

I have been moved by what I have learned about kindness in the last several weeks – the breadth and depth and value of offering help, asking how to be of assistance, and giving up personal time to minister to others. I have come away from this experience with new friends, stronger relationships, and a more heartfelt passion to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

I will find out more this upcoming week about when I can walk without a boot and even drive a motorcycle again. In the meantime, I am enjoying the beautiful sunny weather and reflecting on my many blessings.
