August 4: Romania Romances

Although my time in Romania has been brief, I must say there is something so very endearing about its stunning mountain peaks, picturesque tiny towns with centrally situated churches, and sprawling farmlands at the base of the Carpathians. Somehow, I have felt very much at home.

After pausing for a celebratory chat with the bikers from Poland at Obarsia Lotrului yesterday, I continued north along the remainder of the Transalpina, enjoying more moderate curves that allowed me to pick up some speed and spend a little additional time looking at my surroundings.

Hugging the shorelines of Lake Oasa, Lake Tau-Bistra, and Lake Obreja de Capaina, the road snaked its way along the clefts of the mountains and through several charming villages. Carefully maintained stucco homes and shops were painted in cheerful shades of pink, green, and yellow and topped with red tile roofs. Churches with tall, pointed spires stood proudly in the middle of each little hamlet.

Breathing in the fresh mountain air and taking in all of the beautiful scenery around me, I felt an immense sense of gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had to visit so many wonderful places this summer.

Arriving at Sebes, I was greeted by flower lined streets and more colorful buildings. My lodging at Hotel Leul de Aur was centrally located and offered secure parking in a flat paved area right outside the lobby. The owner made me feel welcome by inquiring about my bike and my travels. After discovering that I am traveling alone he said, “You are very brave.” I responded “Well, I didn’t used to feel that way, but I do now.” He smiled and said he would look forward to my next visit.

Feeling rejuvenated and ready to go in the morning, I headed west towards Hungary as I began my journey back to Germany. Most of the ride took me past expansive green, yellow, and honey-colored fields and farmlands at the bases of the nearby foothills, making for a pleasant journey towards the border.

After passing through Hungarian customs, I made my way to the little village of Morahalom which is perfectly suited to my needs with one open grocery store, gas station, and restaurant.
