August 7: Sweet Memories in France

Today was chock full of positive memories and great food. My adventure took me by ferry to Yvoire France, a preserved fortified village that is considered one of the country’s most beautiful towns. The highlight of the visit was eating crepes at the same place my grandmother and I used to go to together.

Walking down to the ferry this morning on Nyon’s cobblestone covered streets brought back so many positive memories of all the times my grandmother and I strolled through town to shop, eat, admire the views, or sit and listen to the birds. She would share stories of her past and impart words of wisdom that I still benefit from today.

The twenty-minute boat ride across Lake Geneva was incredibly restful – the sun was out, the temperature was mild, the lake’s waters were calm, and the views were spectacular with the Swiss mountains behind me and the French alps in front of me.

Arriving in Yvoire, I climbed up the hill to the center of town, admiring the sight of Yvoire Castle, built in 1036, and the rest of the historic stone buildings generously decorated with planters and hanging pots of colorful geraniums. I’ve always loved the combination of old stones and bright flowers and this place is exceptional, winning an international trophy for landscape and horticulture.

At the top of the hill, I turned left down a little side street to La Creperie D’Yvoire a small eatery that serves fresh crepes of every possible type. I chose a savory crepe with ham, three cheeses, spinach, and fresh cream as well as a sweet crepe served with butter, sugar, and lemon juice. I was grateful that the waiter did not rush the meal as it gave me time to work up more of an appetite as I savored every bite. My grandmother always knew the best places to eat, and these crepes have always been my favorites. She loved to sit at the short kid-sized tables out front and I made sure to eat there today in her memory.

After arriving back in Nyon this afternoon, I spent several hours reading a good book, painting my toenails, and completing some training courses required of me by my school district. It has been so nice to have a little down time to rest and reflect amidst this grand adventure.
