August 22: There’s No Place Like Home

There’s no place like home! I am so excited to be back after nine and a half weeks on the road traveling about 22,000 miles through 8 time zones, dozens of states and provinces, and three countries. Today’s ride took me the final stretch from Goldendale, Washington to West Linn, Oregon.

I got a later start than usual today, simply because the accommodations at my friend’s “Woodland Escape” were so darn relaxing. I enjoyed several cups of tea while making some phone calls, reading a good book, and looking out at her beautiful orchards, gardens, and farm animals. I left feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the transition back to work this week.

My trip home along the Columbia River towards West Linn was breathtaking. I must say there is something unbeatable about the combination of water and mountains together. On the first leg of my trip west on highway 14 towards Wishram, the dark blue of the Columbia stood in stark contrast to the bleached sun-scorched grass on either side of it and I could begin to see visions of Mount Hood in the distance.

As I progressed further towards Hood River, rocky cliffs and deciduous trees filled out the landscape, and Mount Hood became more visible. I passed a variety of rivers and lakes as I wound my way along the Columbia and through several tunnels towards home. The mountains and hills on both sides of the river became more pronounced and the foliage lusher as I got closer to Portland.

I do so very much enjoy my summer adventures, partially because I love to meet new people, see different places, learn about other cultures, and try new roads. But I am so grateful that home is a place I can look forward to returning to. I am so blessed to have wonderful friends, neighbors, and coworkers and to live in a place with such natural beauty. I am looking forward to reconnecting everyone and riding the roads of Oregon again.

Coming home tonight was particularly meaningful as I was able to spend time with my younger son Elliot after months apart. We were able to go to Ranch Pizza for some of their delicious Sicilian- style pizza and catch up on his activities, accomplishments, and plans. What a great day!
